Winning Workplaces and FORTUNE Small Business Names New York Businessman as one of the 2004 Best Bosses

John Pennisi, President and CEO of Medical Management Resources, Inc. (MMRI) was recently honored as one of the nation's top small business leaders. Fortune Small Business magazine and Winning Workplaces announced their second annual list of Best Bosses, 15 outstanding "all-terrain" business leaders who are able to motivate employees through a rough patch of continued belt-tightening and also plot new ways to exploit emerging growth opportunities. With 210 companies nominated nationwide, the field was narrowed down to 35 finalists, from which the 15 winners were selected by a panel of national business experts.

Founded in 1986, MMRI is a medical billing and practice management company located in East Syracuse, NY. The only finalist from New York State, Pennisi is the epitome of a "Best Boss" in the eyes of his employees. By creating a people-friendly workplace, MMRI's turnover rate is below the industry standard. MMRI employee benefits include: flex time; flex hours (9x9 schedule allows for every other Friday off); tuition reimbursement for industry-related courses, business casual dress code and on-site daycare and fitness facilities. More importantly, the company stresses a team approach to problem solving and customer service. Pennisi believes that employees are, in part, motivated by their environment. "I want MMRI to be a place where people like to come to work. On a personal level, I feel it is very important to give employees a sense of stability and control about their jobs," he says. "That kind of empowerment bolsters morale, customer service, and productivity."

Mary Clark, executive director of Winning Workplaces, sums up Pennisi's leadership, "John Pennisi has successfully grown MMRI by building a strong and loyal employee team and by facing into challenges rather than taking a defensive approach. He has developed a loyal employee base, largely through training, mentoring, and involving employees in solving business problems. Loyal, well-trained employees have created a satisfied client base as well, resulting in average annual growth that exceeds 11%."

The complete list of winners appears in the October 2004 issue of FORTUNE Small Business and on the Winning Workplaces website.
